Gluten Free News Round-Up: September 8th-14th

There isn’t much new news on the gluten free front this week, with the exception of articles about how to celebrate National Celiac Awareness Day, which occurred yesterday. So, here’s a short round up:

Crumbs Bake Shop to Open Gluten Free Store in Greenwich Village in October 2013
Crumbs is a NYC founded store specializing in Cupcakes and pastries, and in October 2013 they will open there first ever gluten free bakery that will offer gluten free and peanut free cupcakes, pastries, pies, breads and much more. As a NYer this is great news, as I’ve only head about the Crumbs craze since going gluten free and would love the opportunity to try their products.

Prevalence and Causes of Abnormal Liver Function in Patients with Celiac Disease
This article discusses recent research into liver functioning in patients with CD. The findings suggest that elevated liver function was found in 17.5% of patients, most of which has levels that were mildly elevated. Ultimately, for the majority of subjects going on a gluten free diet resolved this issue after one year.

Scotland’s Celiac Disease Incidence Increased in Past 20 Years
Recent studies have been showing that the incidences of CD across the globe have been increasing, and this study continues that trend. It is suggested here that CD diagnosis has risen 6 fold in the past 20 years in Scotland, you can read on for further details of more statistics related to this claim.
