Gluten Free News Round Up: May 12th-May 18th

Originally, I was going to pick the winner of my giveaway today. However, I have two friends coming down for the weekend and I plan not to be on the computer after this post so I’ve extended the GIVEAWAY deadline to Monday. So, here is still more time to enter to win a Picnic set from Rudi’s. See here for details! Now, onto the news:

Food allergy diagnosis: What parents should know
This article is actually from May 10th, but I came across it this week and felt it was a very honest and simple article for parents. It emphasizes the importance of not only addressing the food allergy itself, but also the stress that such a diet can cause on children. Good simple read!

Gluten Free Myths
This article looks at several myths around the gluten free diet, Celiac Disease, and gluten intolerance. What’s good about it is it doesn’t stop at the general “Gluten diet for weightloss” misconceptions but discusses some more worrying myths and misunderstandings, such as Celiac Disease not being a life threatening condition.

Disney Thinks Bullying a Gluten Free Child is Funny (Sign the Petition saying NO)
Gluten Dude, and a follower of his, shed some light on this not so funny humor in a recent Disney Channel Show. In the show, one of the main character is made fun of for being gluten free, including having gluten filled foods thrown at him. The issue behind this? THIS IS A REALITY FOR MANY GLUTEN FREE CHILDREN and unfortunately it’s not the first time a children’s network has made fun of gluten free children. You can read more in the article about Gluten Dude’s thoughts, and at the end there is petition for Disney to remove the this particular episode.

Gluten-Free Pet Peeves: What Not To Say To Someone Who Doesn’t Eat Wheat
This isn’t so much news, as an amusing (somewhat) reminder of the importance of awareness when it comes to Gluten Free Dietary needs and what it means. I know I get “So can you eat beans/rice/corn/potatoes?” ALL the time, so obviously there is a misconception about what gluten really is…
