Gluten Free News Round-Up: June 30th to July 6th

Summer is beach and BBQ season, so there have been many news stories suggesting ideas for snacks or tips for cross contamination when you live a gluten free summertime life. This Fox news article suggests some gluten free beach snacks, while this US News Health article discusses tips for keeping the fun in BBQing while still having a healthy gluten free summer by offering cross contamination tips and more. In addition, although not necessarily post this week, you can check out my post offering several tips for gluten free BBQing, as well as Gluten Free Gigi’s “6 Tips for Avoiding Gluten on the Grill”. Now, onto some non BBQing related news:

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital at Stony Brook University Launch’s Children’s Celiac Center
On July 10th, Stony Brook University Hospital will be launching the Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity Center at the Children’s Hospital. This will be the Island’s first and only such center. Researchers Complete Genetic Study of Celiac and Five Other Autoimmune Diseases

This article discusses a one of the largest genetic studies conducted looking at autoimmune diseases and their genetics to date. The diseases looked at included Diebetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, Celiac Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn’s Disease, and Psorisis. Unfortunately, no specific easy to identify gene as found, and it seems the genetics for these conditions are more complex.

Gluten-free stores offer shoppers freedom from label-reading
This article discusses gluten free stores located in Los Angeles, and the overall importance of these ‘specialty stores’ to those on a gluten free diet. I enjoy reading articles like this, even if they are no local because they show the importance of a non-restrictive environment and the true ‘hassle’ it is to shop in a store which does not label gluten free items, let alone stock only them.

What is Potential Celiac Disease?
This article discusses Potential Celiac Disease, (PCD) or those who have positive antibodies but clean duodenal mucosa. According to the study, many CD patients have PCD but not all PCD develops into Celiac Disease over time. This is contrary to some ideas that PCD is early Celiac Disease.
