Gluten Free News Round-Up: June 23rd-29th

It’s been a busy week for gluten free news. The biggest area?: Travel. As summer rolls around everyone has the travel bug. The first two articles below are related to gluten free travel, followed by a few more gluten-free articles from the week!

This CNN article discusses traveling with food allergies from the perspectives of food and travel writers and bloggers. Although airing on the side of caution and stresses language barriers and knowing the culture before travel, it is a great little article that reminds us our lives shouldn’t be hindered by a restrictive diet. In addition, is stays positive which is also something of merit found in the article titled “Turn Your Food Allergies into Travel Assets” from Culture Shock Toolbox.
This article, from Gluten Free RD is not so much news as a great resource for anyone looking to camp this summer or beyond. In this article, helpful tips are shared on how to prepare foods, what gluten free foods might be good for camping, trouble shooting and more.
From Businessweek, this article discusses the reasons behind the wait for the release of the Dunkin Donuts gluten free products. The article explains factors such as shelf life, product ingredients, and others as having an influence on the timeliness of the release.
This study looks at the relationship between Celiac Disease and Type 1 Diabetes in respect to mortality. The results suggest that risk of death is high in individuals who have both Type 1 Diabetes and long term Celiac Disease. For the first 5 years after CD diagnosis there does not seem to be a difference in risk, but as time goes on the risk increases. This may show an interesting relationship between the two conditions.
As someone who worked on school health policies as part of my last social work internship, the announcement of the Smart Snacks in schools rules released last week is nothing new. In fact, it’s been in the works for a few years, with different pieces being rolled out each year. However, for the public who isn’t in the field this is new news and Action for Healthy Kids does a great job of describing the new regulations, and the impact they can have on schools.
