FDA Defines “Gluten-Free” for Food Labeling
This biggest news this week is likely the FDA decision to finally define and standardize gluten free labeling in the United States. The law would require that food labeled gluten free meets particular criteria, such as containing <20ppm of gluten. Companies have a year to come into compliance. This new is SO big that it even made mainstream news, and made it incredibly difficult for my to find any news outside of this!

Celiac Disease and Iron Deficiency Linked in Caucasians but Not Non-Caucasians
As the cause and associated conditions of Celiac Disease become more clear it becomes easier to conduct comparative studies, such as this one that compares CD and related Iron Deficiency across Caucasians and non-Caucasians. An interesting pattern emerges, which is described in more detail at the above link.
Antibiotics Linked to Coeliac Disease
The Swedish study discussed here suggested that prior antibiotic use, particularly multiple uses, was related to a 40% increase in Celiac Diagnosis. It’s interesting to me how many diseases are associated with antibiotic use, something used to cure disease but often used ineffectively and excessively.
