Is Celiac Disease the Worlds Greatest Disease?
MindBodyGreen.com’s James Maskell recently stated in an article that Celiac Disease is the world’s greatest disease because it is cured simply by a dietary change, and a healthy one at that, which stresses the link between diet,lifestyle, and health. Given the psychosocial impacts of having such a restrict diet and all of the implications that come with such a drastic life style change I am not sure if I would agree with it being ‘great’. FDA Should Revamp Nutrition Labels
This article, written by Michael F. Jacobson executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, discusses some alterations to food labeling which should be addressed in newer labeling laws. Advances in food science have updated our knowledge of what is healthy, and what isn’t, and it is important that labeling acknowledges these changes. Jacobson also suggests that “Improving food labels could spur companies to market much healthier foods and encourage consumers to make smarter choices”.
I saw your contest in the next blog entry and wondered, is it totally gluten free? Labeling is so important for folks with Celiac, and it just seems like a no brainer. How hard is it to label something as having gluten, other than the companies are worried about a drop in sales. This is similar to the scare that happened when everyone all of a sudden thought carbs were bad and restaurants decided to wrap burgers in lettuce, because they were afraid people would stop buying them.
