Gluten Free News Round-Up: April 11th- 16th

I wasn’t near the computer all weekend, so here is last week’s Gluten Free News Round-Up!

High Rates of CD in those with Multiple Sclerosis
I am always happy to see research done correctly to find relationships to co-morbid disease associated with celiac disease, which there are many. This study shows a higher rate in MS patients as well as their first degree relatives, and in my opinion the inclusion of relatives in the study only hardens the findings. The applications for treatment are spelled out clearly:  “The increased prevalence of celiac disease in MS patients and in their first-degree relatives suggests that early detection and dietary treatment of celiac disease in antibody-positive MS patients is advisable.” So, if you have MS ask your family to be screened as well!

A well written article describing the basics of Gluten Free Diseases and Eating
Regardless of if this information is basic I still feel it is important to get out there to the public, so in my eyes the more well written articles on gluten free living there are the better! Especially if they explain that GF as a ‘fad’ diet is not all that healthy.

Passover is good for increasing the number of gluten free foods in stock
Although a local article, I am seeing the same relevance in my area. With the need for unleavened grain products for Passover we see an increase in gluten free products in stores. So, now’s the time to go out a stock up if you feel like it! Happy Passover and let’s hope there is a gf sale afterwards!

Another Step towards finding the Celiac Disease Gene
Conrats to the doctor in this article for what seems to be a progressive and promising study. I just hope that these studies begin to move closer to diagnosing celiac disease earlier rather than debating which gene is responsible. It is likely, as this study suggests, that there is more than one gene and the importance is not debating but combining studies.
