Gluten Free Anniversary: Six Lessons Learned

IMG_0730Do you celebrate your gluten free anniversary? To me it’s my second birthday, it’s the day I started to get my health back and returned to being ‘me’. That’s something to celebrate… Like many people starting a new month I woke up March 1st 2010 feeling like I’d turned a new leaf. The gluten was out of the house (because I had eaten most of it the week before or sent it home with friends) and I was ready to tackle my new lifestyle.

It’s been six years.

If my gluten free life was a kid I’d likely be starting first grade, and I’d have some understanding of reading, writing, and math. I’ve learned a lot in these six years, just like that first grader. Here are six lessons I’ve learned which I consider essential reminders for anyone living gluten free:

  1. Mistakes will happen, especially if you dine out, but don’t be afraid to be kind while also being your own self advocate. Use these experience to educate, not put a place down (but remember that a complaint CAN go a long way when they just aren’t having it).
  2. Being gluten free makes you connect and think about food on an intimate level many never get to experience, and that can help you find so much out about yourself and your personality.
  3. It is incredibly easy to explore and have adventures, all while staying safe, even when gluten free. I’ve done so many things, and explored so many different types of food with a little persistence, flexibility, and respect.
  4. Being gluten free or on medically restrictive diet does not make you entitled, regardless of what others might think of you. However, the way you approach your  interactions with others regarding your diet and your expectations can make you entitled.
  5. Celiac Disease makes you different, and that unfortunately can lead to discrimination. The best way to counteract this discrimination is to be part of those in the community that advocate for our rights, and educate others. Don’t remain silent about your needs!
  6. We’re pretty awesome. Seriously, despite the restrictions those of us that live gluten free for medical reasons are pretty amazing. The dietary needs influence your entire life in so many positive ways, and because of that we make great partners, boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, relatives or friends.

How long have you been gluten free, and what have you learned in that time?

  1. It’s been 6 months for me – and those have been quite tough. As I cannot have dairy or eggs as well, I am very much stuck in the hardcore mode. I miss regular cakes, and bread, but then I think about all the downsides of eating things that hurt me – and it kind of keeps me going.

    1. Congratulations on reaching the 6 month mark! I think those were the hardest months for me, but you are so right about focusing on your improved health and well being as being the motivator.
