I met up with my cousin Emily for the first time in several years last weekend. With our boyfriends in tow the four of us were half gluten free, that being myself and Emily’s boyfriend whos name happens to be the same as my boyfriend Michael. They chose a gluten free restaurant relatively close to Penn Station and we met there for dinner. The restaurant was Bar Breton.
Firstly: I was delighted to go to restaurant which had gluten free items that were listed as such on the main menus, there was no seperate menu of their gluten free items. While I know there are obviously gluten free items on regular menus at most places it’s hard to tell unless you get something plain and generic, ask lots of nagging questions or you have a gluten free menu to refer to. Also frustrating is that most gluten free menues do not contain prices from my experiences. The feeling of having the gluten free seperate menu and being the odd one out, although in this case I wouldn’t have been since there was another GFer, gets somewhat annoying and frustrating so this change was nice.
I ordered two things for dinner to go with our obviously gluten free sangria:
Honey Glazed Chicken Wings: This was my second attempt at chicken wings on the diet. They were very delicious and tangy. There were seasonings, I believe something typically used in indian cooking, that were scattered well over the wings and not at all over powering. I do however miss the cruncy-ness of boneless breaded chicken wings (I am a big chicken wings fan).
Margherita ‘pizza’ Galette: Gallette’s are considered ‘dinner crepes’. These were gluten free because they were made from buckwheat, which after tasting it tastes a lot better that wheat crepes. The galette I ordered was opened faced with two types of cheese, basil, tomato sauce, fresh greens on top and seasonins. It was very good, although not as large or hearty as i had expected
Overall eating at Bar Breton was worth the experience and ability to relax about eating gluten free. The only downside of the experience was the cost, but that is New York City for you. The small Galette was not worth the price and the wings was not worth the price ($24) as I left Bar Breton still hungry (even after eating the rest of Mike’s gluten free fries which in my opinion were the best thing about the meal).
I am so thankful to have kind family members, even if I don’t see them that often, who understand the needs of someone gluten free. I would recommend Bar Breton to anyone, atleast once, if they have the money to afford it. And ask for a table outside!
Georgianna, I just found a comment from you that I must have missed…you posted on my blogsite (http://autoimmunediseasesgfliving.blogspot.com) a few months ago. I moderate comments and somehow overlooked this one…well I’ve been very ill and if I don’t take care of things immediately I forget them. Anyway, I’m glad I finally found your blog and am now a “follower”! 🙂
Thank you JoAnn. I am sorry that you’ve been so sick. I wish you the best of luck and hope you feel better soon!
