Huntington New York has a new contender in town for your gluten free goodies, Eat Good Market, and I must say that the rest of the supermarkets in town better watch out. Located on East Main Street, Eat Good Market is just a quick car ride from the center of town, and it is well worth that short trip. I was happy to make it in there a few weeks ago, although I missed their grand opening March 8th and 9th. The store is stocked to the gills with great gluten free products including, but not limited to: Canned goods, flours, baking mixes, teas, breads, shampoos and conditioners, lip balms, bars, chips, crackers, meal alternatives, premade meals, frozen meals, and gluten free snacks. The selection also contains many items that meet other dietary needs such as nut free, soy free, dairy free, vegan, and paleo.
1.What inspired you to open Eat Good? Why?I was inspired to open the store because, after my daughter Sophia was diagnosed with Celiac disease, I realized it was time consuming and a chore to go to several stores and read so many labels each week just to provide her with safe gluten free food. As a parent it is your responsibility to provide your children with basic needs like shelter, clothes, love, food. Providing food for Sophia became a bit of a challenge. I remember thinking I can’t change Sophia’s diagnosis but I can change the way we shop for gluten free food. So it started as a wish to make this easier and safer for my family, other families, and anyone who celebrates and shares meals with someone who eats gluten free.
2.What do you hope to achieve through the opening of your store? My goals for the store was to recreate the typical shopping experience for those who eat gluten free. I wanted to provide safe choices, options, and variety to everyone who shops at Eat Good. So if you are GF and lactose intolerant I wanted to provide choices. If you are GF with nut allergies I wanted to provide choices. If you are GF and vegan I wanted to provide choices. I also wanted to provide premade options, which are typically harder to find for someone eating gluten free.
3. What has been the hardest part of your journey towards opening ? What’s been the best/easiest? The hardest part of the journey is the long hours and time away from my family. I was a stay at home Mom for 12 years and now most days I am at the store from 8:30-7:30. It a big change but one I’m happy I chose. The BEST part of the opening Eat Good is getting to know my customers. The happiness when people say “thank you this store is amazing, I don’t have to read a label”. I also love emailing a customer to tell them the product they requested is on the shelf. The idea that I can make people happy by providing their favorite foods, especially when they are limited is really very satisfying.
4. Do you have a favorite product that you sell? Does your daughter? My favorite …. that’s tough, I have a few. I love Against the Grain rolls and baguettes. I’m also a huge fan of maple almond butter on crackers, fruit, a wrap, a spoon! Sophia hands down loves XO Brownies, and Joan’s English Muffins.

My best friend was diagnosed with celiac a few years ago. I remember going grocery shopping with her and reading every label. A store like this must be a dream for those on gluten-free diets. http://www.acr-research.com
